Whole-house water filtration in Greenville and the Upstate
A whole-house water filter gives you cleaner water from every tap, matched to what is actually in your water. City water or well, we test first and recommend only what you need.
Do I need a whole-house water filter?
A whole-house water filter makes sense if you notice chlorine taste or smell, sediment, staining, or odors, or if your home is on a private well. The right system depends on what is in your water, so Ethical Plumbing tests it first and gives you options with written prices. Call 864-438-0525.

Treat the water you have, not a sales sheet
Water treatment is easy to oversell. A system that is right for hard well water in Pickens County is the wrong system for soft city water in Greenville. So we start with a water test and look at what is actually coming into your home.
A whole-house filter is installed where the main water line enters the house, so every faucet, shower and appliance gets treated water. Depending on your test, that might be a sediment filter, a carbon filter for chlorine taste and smell, or specialty media for iron and sulfur on well water. If your water is hard, a water softener may be the better answer, or part of it.
Signs your water needs treatment
Look for:
- Chlorine taste or smell from the tap
- Sand, grit or sediment in fixtures
- Orange, brown or black staining
- Rotten egg smell from hot or cold water
- Blue-green stains around copper pipe
- Spotty dishes and scale on fixtures

Water in Upstate homes
Most homes in Greenville, Spartanburg and Anderson are on city water, which is treated and generally soft. For city homes, the most common reason to filter is the taste and smell of the disinfectant the utility adds, plus sediment from older mains.
Homes on private wells are a different story, especially in the rural parts of Pickens, Spartanburg and the North Carolina mountain counties. Upstate well water can carry iron, manganese and sulfur, and some wells run slightly acidic, which slowly eats at copper pipe. A water test tells us which of these you have, so the system fixes the real problem. If you are on a well, see our well pump service too.
What affects the price of whole-house water filter
You get a written price before work starts. It depends on:
- What your water test shows
- City water or private well
- Filter type and capacity
- Adding a softener to the system
- Space and plumbing at the main line
- Bypass and shutoff valves for service

Whole-house water filter FAQs
What is the difference between a water filter and a water softener?
A filter removes things like sediment, chlorine, iron or sulfur. A softener removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. Some homes need one, some need both.
Do I need a water filter on city water?
Not always. City water is treated and safe to drink. Many homeowners add a whole-house carbon filter for better taste and smell, or a sediment filter if they see grit in fixtures.
Do you test the water first?
Yes. We test before recommending a system, so you only pay for treatment your water actually needs.
How often do whole-house filters need changing?
It depends on the filter and your water. Sediment and carbon cartridges are often changed every few months to a year. We tell you the schedule for your system.
Will a whole-house filter lower my water pressure?
A properly sized system should not noticeably lower pressure. Undersized filters and clogged cartridges are what cause pressure drops.
What causes a rotten egg smell in my water?
Usually hydrogen sulfide in well water, or a reaction inside the water heater. We check both before recommending a fix.
Why are there blue-green stains around my fixtures?
That is usually acidic water reacting with copper pipe. It is common on some Upstate wells, and a neutralizing filter corrects it before it damages your pipes.
Do you service water softeners too?
Yes. We install, repair and service water softeners. See our water softener page for more.
